A life changing journey in pictures

16. November 2018

More than 20 years ago, Ken Schluchtmann undertook a journey that would change his life forever. What started off as an ordinary vacation evolved into an immersive experience, stepping inside an entirely different world featuring a visual intensity impossible to be captured in words.

Several years later – by then Schluchtmann had quit his law studies and was graduating from Lette-Verein Berlin as a photo designer – he specialized in architectural and landscape photography and began to develop the unique visual language that characterizes his iconic style.

Since then, Ken Schluchtmann has returned to Norway more than 15 times and is now sharing the results of his trips during the past eight years. His exhibition „Architecture and Landscape in Norway“ at the Felleshus of the Nordic Embassies in Berlin is an examination of the country, its impressive landscapes and its contemporary architecture.

Architecture and Landscape in Norway – the opening

16. November 2018

„… The Norwegian Embassy in Berlin is delighted to host the exhibition “Architecture and Landscape” by the photographer Ken Schluchtmann at the Common House of the Nordic Embassies in Berlin from October 4, 2018 until January 17, 2019.

The exhibition features photographs from architect and art projects along the Norwegian National Routes, which Schluchtmann has covered extensively over many years. With his photos Ken Schluchtmann sets a high standard for architectural photography, as well as for capturing the surrounding landscapes of the installations and buildings along the routes.

The exhibition is curated by Janike Kampevold Larsen, associate professor at the Institute of urbanism and landscape of The Oslo School of Architecture and Design. The exhibition project has been selected for the official program of European Month of Photography in Berlin, a testimony to the high quality of Schluchtmann’s work. …“

Architecture and Lansdcape in Norway – the exhibition

16. November 2018

„… Schluchtmann’s photographic eye harbors an astonishing precision. It scales and aligns – but it also imagines.
Architecture is always positioned in a landscape context, precisely scaled to an often impressive topology and view. Its shapes, materials and colors are allowed to play with elements and vegetation, and the photographer’s intuitive imagination makes both architecture and landscape perform, as built, human or animal.
The exhibition situates Ken Schluchtmann in a long tradition of landscape representation in Norway. …“

Janike Kampevold Larsen, Curator

„… The exhibition and graphic design concept plays with the depiction of the national routes of Norway that Ken Schluchtmann has travelled and photographed. The exhibition space is defined by black walls which follow the outlines of the landscape routes. These walls trace the photographers itinerary and provide changing spatial experience and surprising views for the visitors within the space itself. The exhibition creates a multilayered interplay of photography, perspective and the architecture of the Felleshus of the Nordic embassies. …“

FREESPACE – Impressions from the Architecture Biennale 2018

08. Juni 2018

Invitation to a conversation between Mario Cucinella MCA, curator of the Italian pavilion, Lars Krückeberg, GRAFT, curator of the German pavilion and Christine Edmaier, president of the Berlin Chamber of Architects about FREESPACE, with exclusive pictures from the Biennale preview by photographer Ken Schluchtmann – 13 June 2018, at FAB Berlin, Sarotti-Höfe

FREESPACE is the theme of the 16th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia.

The German pavilion, „Unbuilding Walls“, deals with a very special space, namely the former death strip that marked the division of Germany. Using outstanding urban and architectural examples, the curators of the German pavilion, GRAFT with Marianne Birthler, show how architecture can heal geopolitical „wounds“.

„ARCIPELAGO ITALIA. Projects for the future of the country’s inner territories“, as the Italian pavilion is called, is concerned with the revitalisation of Italy’s internal areas, away from the big cities and coastal areas. Under the direction of the curator Mario Cucinella, the design of FREESPACE is to become an instrument of discussion and help for the decision-makers and will thus figure out a vision for the future.

Christine Edmaier, President of the Berlin Chamber of Architects, represents the architects who deal with FREESPACE in its various outcomes in their daily business.
This unique confrontation between two national pavilions is accompanied by a selection of pictures made by Ken Schluchtmann, sharing his Venice impressions with the guests.

Myanmar, the land of 1000 pagodas

08. Mai 2018

The TV series “Grenzenlos – Die Welt entdecken” featuring “Myanmar, the Land of 1000 Pagodas” was aired on Saturday, March 31 at 7PM on SAT1. Here you can meet Ken Schluchtmann on board of SY Meltemi, a modern catamaran from BurmaBoating.com, exploring the Mergui Archipelago along Burma’s southern coast. It’s seven years Ken travels to this country which only recently opened to tourism and since then he is capturing the ongoing change with dedicated photo reportages.

He met the Moken, one of the few remaining hunter-gatherer populations in Southeast Asia who have made the sea their home. In Myanmar there live approximately 3,000 Moken on the 800 island of the Mergui Archipelago of overwhelming beauty but yet one of the least touristic places in South-East Asia because of the long closure of Myanmar’s frontiers.

Hotel Juvet, Norway

10. April 2018

The Juvet Landscape Hotel designed by architects Jensen & Skodvin is located in a nature reserve in Åndalsnes, a town in north-western Norway near the Gudbrandsjuvet gorge and its spectacular waterfall. It is located on the scenic road towards Trollstigen, another great destination for nature lovers. At the Juvet Landscape Hotel the rooms are scattered across the site to conserve the landscape and the concept of sustainability goes beyond the classic criteria of reducing energy consumption and using renewable materials.

The real beauty of this place is expertly rendered in the previously unpublished images by the photographer Ken Schluchtmann, who went back to Norway last summer to complete his photography project called “Architecture and Landscape in Norway”. Schluchtmann has been coming here for eight years to document the architecture and artworks popping up along the famous National Landscape Routes for a unique visual narrative that showcases the natural and architectural beauties of Norway.

IAA motorshow – MINI exhibition booth

30. September 2017

More a street festival than an exhibition booth. The MINI brand’s presence at the IAA 2017 was an invitation to the visitors to immerse themselves in an urban setting with industrial-style architecture. The five MINI models (MINI three-door, MINI five-door, MINI Convertible, MINI Clubman and MINI Countryman) have been arranged in different “mood boards” all focussed on urban living. The highlights have been the smoothie kiosk with a street food festival feeling offering healthy drinks and there was also a real barbershop where male visitors could get a 30-minute styling and grooming session.

IAA motorshow – Opel exhibition booth

27. September 2017

At IAA 2017 the agency VITAMIN E (Hamburg) has proposed an artistic and lively interpretation of the theme „urbanity meets adventure“ with its new Opel stand.
As with their first appearance for Opel at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, VITAMIN E’s goal was to turn the classic motor show into a brand owned platform with a friendly, authentic and very close brand experience that gives visitors the opportunity to experience the Opel brand in a special way.
In Frankfurt on a total of 3,300 square metres, the experts realised a collage-like urban setting for spatial communication, combining modern façade elements in concrete look with classical architecture and vertical gardens. Always in the spotlight: The world premiere of the new Opel SUV „Grandland X“ embedded in X-Ville, an installation offering far more than just a platform for the new innovative compact SUV.

Allmannajuvet Zinc Museum by Peter Zumthor

07. September 2017

During his trip to Norway this summer, Ken Schluchtmann stopped at Allmannajuvet Zinc Museum in Sauda.

The museum is one of the 10 largest attractions along the National Tourist Routes and was commissioned to Swiss architect Peter Zumthor by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration in 2002. It opened last year and aims to bring the history of the briefly booming yet now abandoned Norwegian Allmannajuvet zinc mine to a broader public.

The architecture consists in a combination of three sleek, minimal volumes and industrial aesthetics. Ken Schluchtmann is the first photographer who pictures not only the architecture but shares with us also its natural context for a better comprehension of Zumthor’s project

The Travel Episodes – Myanmar – Golden Times

07. Juli 2017

The Travel Episodes Burma

Myanmar from the North to the South. This time author Martin Schacht and photographer Ken Schluchtmann take the train to travel from Yangoon to the Golden Rock and Hpa An. The train is one of the last places where Myanmar preserves its “old” charme and old that is just five years ago when there were the first steps towards a normalisation of the country.

As in the previous episodes published in 2016, the text written by Martin is illustrated with Ken’s personal take on the beautiful landscape and amazing people, now enriched by short videos to get a better understanding of the overall atmosphere you can find in this picturesque places.

Bentley Bentayga Diesel – South Tyrol, Italy

03. März 2017

The shooting of the new Bentayga Diesel, the first diesel in Bentley’s history has taken place in an amazing setting: Meran in the Italian Dolomites. Unique locations challenging the Bentayga, „a SUV for every kind of journey“ to show it’s particular combination of practicality, power and luxury with innovative technology.

The first stop was the famous vinery Manincor in Kaltern, the largest wine estate in South Tyrol, since 1606 a family operation with charm and personality – in legacy to the meaning of the family name itself because „Man-in-cor“ means roughly „Hand on heart“.

Then there was the Jaufenpass waiting for the Bentley Bentayga Diesel with its wonderful snowy mountain landscape on 2094 meters. Curvy roads for amazing photographs taken by Ken Schluchtmann from a flying helicopter to catch the very essence of the car performance with its refined 8-cylinder diesel engine.

The trip ended in the new luxury resort San Luis, opened just a couple of month ago at Avelengo not far from Meran. In the middle of a 40 hectares alpine park with a beautiful lake there are wooden chalets and tree-houses welcoming the guests in a minimal yet balanced and comfortable style in close relation to the breathtaking nature of the Dolomites.

A unique backdrop for a one-of-a-kind SUV!

Hotel Nai Lert Park, Bangkok

25. Januar 2017

The green paradise of Swissotel Nai Lert Park, Bangkok

A photographer is never truly out of duty, even when on holiday. This is the case of Ken Schluchtmann who has been to Bangkok before heading to Myanmar where he is completing his photographic research with a special attention to the fast changes in Birmanian society and traditions.

During his stay at the Swissotel Nai Lert Park he caught the occasion to immortalize the hotel’s spectacular lush garden with over 32.000 square meters of tropical vegetation created on what was in the past a bus parking area.

It might be the last chance we have to see this green oasis in the heart of Bangkok because one of the first 5-star-hotels of the city, founded 36 years ago by the prominent Nai Lert Family, the first Thai developer who built his fortune in the first half of the 20th century, has closed. Once a very popular deluxe hotel which the interiors have been renovated in the early 2000’s by the architects Calvin Tsao and Zack McKown it has faced difficult times after the owners switched from the Hilton to the Swissotel chain, becoming just another victim of the ever changing tourism market.

Ken Schluchtmann shares with us his personal vision of a peaceful green oasis in the midst of the hustle and bustle of Bangkok, the inviting free-form pool, the well thought little rivers for a unique experience of relax we hope will survive the uncertain present.

Creating living spaces that meet the different needs of seniors is one of the great challenges of our times, considering that the population’s average age is increasing and the social structure is also changing.
The “Haus Mattiasgärten” facility of the advita association that provides services and care for the elderly recently opened in the Friedrichshain district in Berlin. It’s a 48-apartment residential building designed by con-tura architekten, with no architectural barriers, where each unit is between 25 and 53 square metres and the facilities include community spaces and “on demand” healthcare on the ground and mezzanine floors writes a whole new chapter for this category of architecture. It was built by developer Kondor Wessels at the entrance of the Volkspark park and near the Vivantes Klinikum hospital.

22. Juni 2016

Polimi Milano

Over summer, SpazioFMG, IrisFMG gallery and showroom in Milan is hosting “Norway, Architecture, Infrastructure. Landscape. Photographs by Ken Schluchtmann”, concept by Ken Schluchtmann, curated by Luca Molinari and Alessandro Benetti in collaboration with Christiane Bürklein. A journey to Norway as a theme in keeping with the season and a unique opportunity to get to know the majestic landscapes of Norway that multi award-winning German photographer Ken Schluchtmann has immortalised, as well as the ideas of the architects behind these infrastructures and the constructions that aim to promote tourism as a means of underpinning and supporting the local economy in Norway.

Every photographic project is accompanied by a folder containing technical drawings and detailed descriptions by the architects to provide all the information needed about the project, including its actual location. The exhibition set-up underscores the idea of the journey: wooden crates with the map of Norway are used as tables for the folders and reference the itinerant nature of the National Tourist Routes.

Once more it is the image – and therefore the photographer as mediator between architect and audience – becoming the messenger of the design idea. Ken Schluchtmann shares his visual narrative of a country begging to be explored: Norway.

„Inside Out“ – Palais de Tokyo Paris, Triennale der Photographie Hamburg

02. November 2015

Glasgow-born, Berlin-based designer Leigh Sachwitz’s Studio for Design flora&faunavisions GmbH has created a mesmerizing interactive experience called “Insideout” for the „Photography Playground“ at the Triennale der Photographie in Hamburg. It is a 360° multimedia installation that explores the house as a sanctuary and as a safe haven from nature’s many forces.

Inside the greenhouse-like illuminated installation, the viewer experiences nature’s many forces by hearing the rain and watching the dark clouds gather above, and when the protective walls disappear, the participant will feel exposed and vulnerable in the eye of the storm. But then, once the storm has passed, there is a feeling of purity and freshness, and an overall sense of calm envelopes the participant.

The visual installation is accompanied by sound design by the Berlin-based award-winning composer, musician and producer Andi Toma, one of the founding members of the electronic music collaboration Mouse on Mars.

On 28 October the “Perspective Playground“ has opened at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. The art installations of this new exhibition is curated and produced by flora&faunavisions for the lead agency VITAMIN E – and the client OLYMPUS Europe. Installations from internationally renowned artists, included INSIDEOUT, transport you into a fascinating and playful world of art and science that spans several floors of this renowned Paris museum – one of the top 5 in the world for contemporary art, again photographed by Ken Schluchtmann who underlines the visual impact of the artworks.

The Jining Science & Technology Center is the central building of the new high-tech development area in Shandong province, reflecting a modern and sustainable approach to design. The vision of the Science Center was to create a project that represents the spirit of the high-tech industry by combining education, science, business and entertainment.

This project identity is the circle-shaped horizontal array of buildings with the consistent height of each structure and the outstanding seemingly continuous outer façade across each building. The photographies in this book are the result of over 20,000 kilometres traveled in five years through the breathtaking landscapes of Norway, capturing innovative architecture along the Norwegian National Tourist Routes.
The hardcover book contains 160 pages with 106 illustrations and detailed maps to localize exactly the position of the spots he visited and photographed.
Clear images which transmit all the power of the unique nature, a kind of travel diary, showing Schluchtmann’s personal take on nature in dialogue with contemporary architecture.

diephotodesigner.de become „World Architectural Photographer of the Year 2013“

09. Oktober 2013

At the World Architectural Festival (WAF) in Singapore diephotodesigner.de become again „World Architectural Photographer of the Year 2013“ by winning the „Arcaid Images Archtiectural Photography Awards“.

“In Schluchtmann’s image the viewer experiences a sense of terror at how the raw power of nature appears to overwhelm the fragile manmade structures clinging to the cliff edge. Confronted by this elemental energy, humanity appears totally insignificant. All we can do is gasp in awe. It reminds me of that famous German Romantic painting by Caspar David Friedrich ‘Wanderer Above a Sea of Fog’. It’s extremely compelling and dramatic, yet it also has a quiet intensity and beauty in its muted colours and soft light. It doesn’t shout to get your attention but is nonetheless an exquisitely riveting image that touches your emotions in a way that goes well beyond its obvious technical accomplishment.” – Catherine Slessor, The Architectural Review

Winning the award for the second time (after 2012) makes us very happy. This even more as we got four pictures in three categories shortlisted. Many thanks to the jury rewarding our work in this way.

This year’s judges were: Zaha Hadid, Ivan Harbour, Catherine Slessor, Eva Jiricna and Graham Stirk.

The Trollstigen Project

01. Oktober 2012

The project enhance the experience of the Norwegian Trollstigen plateau’s location and nature. Thoughtfulness regarding features and materials underscores the site’s temper and character, and well-adapted, functional facilities augment the visitor’s experience. The architecture is to be characterised by clear and precise transitions between planned zones and the natural landscape. Through the notion of water as a dynamic element – from snow, to running and then falling water – and rock as a static element, the project creates a series of prepositional relations that describe and magnify the unique spatiality of the site.
